SALLY ESINAM TORPEY was born into the humble TORPEY family in January 8, 1984, at OLA Estate, Cape Coast, Ghana. She entered Senior Secondary School [High School] at 16 and soon found out how reckless some of her peers were with regards to matters of sexuality rather than the fundamental reason for coming to school to learn and become useful to themselves and society in future.
Thus, she became concerned about the high school drop out rate that bedeviled the girl-child due to early teenage pregnancy. Inspired by the philosophical words of Dr. J. E. K Aggrey [one of the foremost scholars of the Gold Coast, now Ghana that “If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation”.
Sally Torpey realized how so important, how dear and how powerful womanhood could be if her peers, the future nation builders, could remain focused on their studies and come out as scholars to move their communities and nation forward.
In order to create the desired awareness amongst her peers and inculcate in them good morale behaviour in line with her cherished dreams, she formed the Millenuim Ladies Club.
Many joined the club. And Sally as the president, would arrange and bring in resource persons to give talks on topical issues beneficial to women, like personal hygiene, female reproductive health, diseases etc.
On leaving school in 2002, Sally did not give up that dream culminating in the formation of the Millenium Ladies Club. The additional realization that women of Africa, particularly Ghana, are poor, destitute and helpless, streghthened her resolve to set up an organization to help address the problems of destitute women and the school-dropout. Urged on by her supportive parents, Sally registered Sympathy International as a Non-Governmental Organization in the year 2002.
Her tremendous zest for work and unparelled hospitality towards people with whom she has to do soon caught the eyes of the Ghana Aids Commission who signed Sympathy International on advocacy and awareness campaign in the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic, in the Central Region of Ghana.
By dint of hard work, dedication and above all, her sympathy towards the plight of women, Sympathy International, under the able leadership of Sally Torpey shared honours, probably with others, in the reduction of the HIV/AIDS prevalent rate from 7.6% in 2003 to 3.8% in May 2005 in the Cape Coast District.
Currently, GARI PROCESSING business is under way at Attabadzi Junction. Up to sixty (60) women are engaged on the job to generate income for themselves. Other projects are on the drawing board to take off when funds are available.
My Message to the WORLD....................
The greatest thing I leant when I was six years is to love, have hope and continually have faith without losing it. I will share this with you - Love is the greatest, strongest and most powerful tool for life. It bears all things, endures all things and believes all things, above all love never fails. Love should be every ones heart greatest joy. With love you are never selfish.
Hope, I see as a psychological force, power that makes you believe you can move on, you can make it. It brings you closer to reaching what you want to achieve, it keeps you alive knowing you will live, or make it. Also it takes your mind away from thinking about your distressed situation-nothing is easily achieved without being hopeful.
To me this word (faith) is a declaration of your stand in religion. This caries the believe in (God) for example, since I am a Christian, it make you feel that all will be well with his help. And this also works better if you trust that it works.
The world today is filed with pain, suffering, disaster, poverty, and deprivation. People struggle every day to ease them selves from their pains and agonies. Without making progress or finding hope for a brighter day.
Studying the frustration of mankind and the desperate solutions they find for them, which are wrong any way- I felt no matter how young I may be I can be of Help to someone, a shoulder for someone to cry on, I can also help someone know there is a brighter day ahead. I could also help in bringing a change in the world know matter were I may be.
Cause I always had a shoulder to cry on. Having a wonderful home and a descent upbringing that some people did not have, but wish they had. So many broken homes producing many street children. They take there life into there own hands since they have no guidance.
There are so many who lack support, care, love thou they could have been good. In retune they rather have the reverse thus hate, abuse, loneliness, disease, poverty and the likes.
I count my self very blessed or may be sent with divine ideas to help make a change in society.
That is why I am doing social work today.
It has been my dreams to help women, both young and old, who due to unfortunate circumstances are just on the edge of falling. Not having any job, no skill to erne a living from, having to depend on men to feed and cloth them. When they could be co-bread winners in their families. I believe women can be trained in deferent vocations and equip them to erne a living for them selves. Also to help the youth discover there talents make the best out of there youthful age. We are those who hold tomorrow.
One thing I will tell every one reading this is - You are unique. You are very special and powerful. No matter who you are, where you find yourself, where you come from, know that you can make it through determination and hard work for us the sky is not the limit, but the beginning. We can achieve success when we are confident and ready to learn. I will inspire you with motivational words of W.E. B. Dubois which I love so much. It inspires me every step of the way and I quote”
‘’Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
We ask our self’s, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
We were born to make manifest
The Glory of God that is within us.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same’’.
Be focused in all things you do. Your life is a success story about to be told!
God bless you.
